i dont know my telephone number!

Please can you help? I have recently moved into a new house which has new telephone socket & line but I need to know the telelphone number. I cannot find out doing what BT said, which was to call 17070: this provided the options of pressing 2 to do a quiet line check, press 3 for another type of line check; neither provided a line identifier. I do not intend to use BT but I can't get another provider without a telephone number.

    Can you call a mobile?

I've got a similar problem actually - I've been living there 5 years and still don't know it, it says 'number withheld' :rotfl:

  • Tried calling a mobile but just get the message 'the number you have dialled has not been recognised'. There is a dial tone - but I can't ring anyone to find out the number. BT were most unhelpful! :(

it sounds as if you havent got one, and that the line is disconnected

can who ever you want to sign up with not provide one ?
failing that you may need to sign up to bt, then switch but they may have a contract period

Normally, it's Press 1 for ring back so that option was missing.

I read that, occasionally, a withheld number can be released if the 1470 prefix is used.

    Try 147017070
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • You don't need to know the telephone number. Even if you did it's not relevant, because when the service is activated, it might change.

When you approach the company you want, you supply the address it's to be provided at and they organise it. They will usually give you a provisional number at that point, but it can then still change between that point and when the service is up and running.
  • There is a BT engineering number which tells the line number - you just have to dial 17070.

When you dial 17070, it should respond with 'this circuit is defined as 0123456789' before it gives you the numbered options for quiet line test etc?
    What did you get?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • it is 147017070 as it sounds like the line was withheld on all calls

That is exactly how the circuit (pstn number) is defined....
However, re-activing that number dont always work....

If you've just moved in, and haven't yet approached a telco to set up your account, line and telephone number, you won't have one.

If you've just had a telco set your account up after moving in then your number will be on the paperwork they sent.
