What about using P2G on an IPOD touch (£100) ?0

). Having said that, my son has severe communication difficulties and there is a suitable app available on the Ipad, called Proloquo2go. He uses it in school and we would like an Ipad for him to use at home, in Scouts, at Deaf club, etc. It seems that P2G is only available for the Ipad, so that is our only option. An Ipod isn't suitable because of his poor eyesight.
I have applied for funding from a charity for the IPad and app; they have decided that he also needs a protective case and a lanyard type thing to help prevent damage if he drops it. I can't afford an Ipad and the app (P2G is £110 ).
Hi kingfisherblue and good luck with your funding application. I got an iPad for my autistic son in January and it is a massive help - he engages with it in a way he never did with PECS etc and all those things that used to take hours with a printer, glue and laminator can be downloaded in seconds.
I just wondered if you'd seen this before, it's a (regularly updated) spreadsheet of apps that people with autistic children have found helpful.
iPad apps for people with autism.
The ones that my son uses the most are NeoPaul (free app which reads aloud words you type in - he couldn't read at the start of this year and is now fluent, I believe that this app has helped massively), Leafjam, Forge of Neon (3D drawing app), Poke Me (interactive giggle monster!) and the built in calendar.Quid quid latine dictum sit, altum videtur0 -

Head over to Amazon and buy a BRAND NEW Android tablet for about 200 quid, not only are they generally much much better than the ipad they also have lots and lots of FREE apps, everything from apple involves more and more money all the time.
Crikey I remember and old saying that goes something like "foolish people dad de dah soon parted da ded da money"
Amazingly enough the people that actually KNOW something about technology generally do not own anything with a half eaten apple for a badge, we tend to leave it for people that also like designer bags and shoes.................paying for the label need I say more??
Hi there.. any chance you have a link to something good for son's Xmas pressie? my son asked for the Kindle Fire but don't think it will be out in time for Xmas? what do you think.
Thanks.:)0 -

There are some great deals over on amazon at the moment, I am still researching as I am going to be ordering 3 of them 1 for each child, the older 2 are getting 10 inch ones then our little wee 3 year old is getting a 7 inch one.
I too was hoping the fire would be available here pre christmas not to be unfortunately, it only has a 7 inch screen at the mo as well they are supposed to be releasing a 10 inch version later next year
It looks great though from what I have read on some american review sites, it is basically a blackberry playbook re-badged
I am going to start a thread over on the tech forum over the next couple of days with my finds, some great people over there with a wealth of knowledge so am hopeful of achieving a good tablet for a reasonable price

I am just browsing some tablets on Amazon .. there's one that get's really good reviews for only £154 .. my son is 8 so Ipad prices def not appropriate! £154 seems a brilliant price.. what do you think? http://www.amazon.co.uk/A1CS-X220-TABLET-ANDROID-1080P/dp/B004F33FJ6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Thanks.:cool:0 -
Seems OK some great reviews and as you say the price for a youngster is moreeeeee than enough
It only has 512mb of ram would be better with 1 gig but then again android really is not a memory hog so should be fine. I have my eye on this one on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140593558790?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_2011wt_1270
It is even cheaper
It has similar spec stil android 2.2 although you could update this to 2.3 gingerbread if you really wanted to, it has slightly bigger onboard storage of 16 gig so plenty of room for movies and music and of course the seller is a huge ebay seller and you also get the usual ebay and paypal protection, got to be a winner surely...........
Still looking though I will pm you if I find anything with an even bigger spec

The one op asked about seems to have a resistive screen...I can imagine a child getting a bit frustrated with that? Not sure mind you if resistive screens are any better than they used to be?
Off the top of my head, what about the Archos 101? I haven't looked at it much mind you but I know I saw one somewhere for about £140?If my words are missing letters then please excuse me....my keyboard is a tad dodgy!!0 -
