Windows 7 removing windows.old

I have about 300 gig of files in windows.old. Tried disk cleanup to no avail. Any thoughts please?

Assuming you can safely delete them, what happens if you go into Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder containing windows.old, highlight it with a mouse-click, and press 'Delete' ???0

Well just kept running disk clean up and suddenly it worked.0
