Just bought house - cancelling utilities from rental and setting up new: HELP!

Hi everyone.
So we just moved house on Sunday to our own pad! I want to set up new utility accounts for our new home with new suppliers. We've taken meter readings and been looking at the comparison sites for best deals for gas and elec.
The only thing I'm worried about is the utility bills in our old house. We were renting and it was a managed letting, so they apparently deal with closing these accounts. What I'm not sure of is whether we'll be charged for closing the account as we've only had it open 6 months?
Also, are we allowed to set up new gas and elec accounts whilst we still have others open at another property? (we're not officially vacating until friday so can't close them until then)
Sorry if its a dumb question but I just want to check as our lettings agent were hopeless and anytime I ask them anything they just come across as patronising and don't ever seem to get to the bottom of anything!
Thanks - any advice welcomed!

What I would do if at all possible is call the supplier for the old address, give them final meter readings and tell them you've moved out and close the account. They don't care about the date the tenancy ends. I wouldn't trust the management people to do it properly.
Then phone the current supplier for the new address, give opening readings and open an account. Then you can think about moving to a new supplier.
Keep all the meter readings you have given and check them against the final bill from the old address and the first bill at the new address.0 -

Thanks to you both - the only thing is we don't know who the current accounts are held with for the new house.
We bought it from an equity release company and I know the estate agent took their final meter readings for them because I was with him when he did it. I can ask the EA to provide me with the details and go from there I think.
I will certainly be closing the accounts for our old property myself - as they didn't manage to set them up properly in the first place so I can't be certain they'll close them either!!
Thanks for the advice.

There are numbers to call to find out who your current supplier is. Have a read of this.
