0871 Message Retrieval Scam - RECORDED IT!!

Hi everyone

We recently received a call into our offices trying to get us to call an 0871 number. We recorded it and you can listen to it if you like.

I used to own a Telecom Company which I sold last year and know that these calls will earn the 'host' about 6ppm which is not as much as premium rate numbers but believe me it can really add up. It will cost you the caller about 10ppm to call and 'retrieve' your message.

The company was sold so that we could concentrate on a new invention which records, encryptes and stores unlimited amounts of calls off site for our customers. We obviously have this technology installed in our offices and though I can't give you access to the call on our servers, I have uploaded the file to RapidShare which is a free download. It is in a .AU Audio format which will play in your media player (Windows, Real Player etc) and is safe and virus free.

I'm not going to give my company name out as this is not meant to be an advert for us, it is merely to highlight what goes on in our industry and that you need to be aware of these scams. I also got a text message last week also asking me to dial an 0871 number so it seems that they may be increasing this now.

You can download the call by clicking the link below.

Hope it works!

    Yes, it worked.

This scam has been going for ages and is common.

Regular forum members are aware of it.

It's not just on 0871 though. It happens on 070 (personal number range) and 0870. Also to a lesser degree on other lower premium rate range 0844 and 0845.
  • I've rec'd a call like that on my landline (taken by the ansaphone, luckily, and not one of my children), and had a couple of similar texts/calls on my mobile which is very rarely used except for emergencies.
I looked up the country code for one 'missed' call and it was for Nigeria  (?)
