Retrospective claim of child tax credit

I am a disabled ex service man,on retiremen i moved with my wife and two young children to the southwest of france purely for health reasons,at the time all was well as my pension was woth tripple in euros,however when the pound started to fall things got very tough and we had to move back to the uk,in all the time we were there we recieved a tax return every year but no information with reference to child tax credits which i have been told we could have been recieving since 2003,on contacting HMRC they informed me that they only accept back claims up to three years.I have heard of HMRC taking back overpaid claims for up to ten years. Is there anyway of claiming some of the child tax credit back of HMRC ??

in ordser to claim CTC retrospectively, you would need a really good reason and sadly, ignorance of entitlement isn't viewed as a good reason.
the onus is ALWAYS on the claimant to find out their entitlement and not the other way around.
they will usually on pay any benefit retrospectively if you can prove that you enquired and were given false information saying you didnt have any entitlement. as i said they will require proof.

there is no time limit for recovering any benefit overpayments, as it is public funds and the secretary of state has to recover it.
