Egg emergency cover question

in Credit cards
My OH cleared his Egg credit card account in the summer. He has recently received a letter saying he has over £80 outstanding to pay. He knows for definite he had cleared it in full so he went to check online and there was nothing there, due to Egg being transferred to Barclaycard. Today he set up his Barclaycard account and it says that in August £36.99 was taken out for Egg emergency cover, and the remainder is made up of unpaid charges. He was unaware of this cover. He never said he wanted it. I know he should have maybe checked his account but as he had paid off the balance and he hadn't received any letters he thought he was okay.
Is there anything he can do to have these charges cancelled? I know it's maybe a long shot but he definitely didn't agree to having the emergency cover - even if they dropped the charges which amounts to almost £50 it would be something.
