Cable Broadband

Hi guys. apologies if this is in the wrong area of the forums but it feels more of a geeky / techie enquiry :D

I used Virgin Media's postcode checker to see if I can get broadband and the website says I can. I double checked with their interactive help, samKnows and cable.co.uk who all concurred.

I was advised to email cablemystreet and Customer Care at virgin and got. Virgin Customer Care says, yes I have cable; cablemystreet says no. This is now four yes and one no.

Is there any way of checking on the road? I live in a rural area but I am 180 feet away from a major A road. Any help would be appreciated.

Since you're getting it from Virgin you would hope they would know where the cable has been laid. Oh, no, it's Virgin. Scrub that idea!

Maybe check for the presence of a green cabinet by the roadside which is not a BT one? (Yes, it's quite difficult to tell them apart.)

Maybe ask your neighbours if anyone has Virgin, especially those further away from the major road than you. (Probably the best idea.)

Oh, and the ultimate best way to find out if you can get the service is to order it. They will tell you pretty sharpish if you can't get it!

In the cable area nearest to me, the access points in the street (like manhole covers but smaller) have the legend "Cable Access TV" embossed into them, so that would be my starting point.....

Round here theres new(or a darker colour tarmac) patches of tarmac where they put the access points in.
  • Have a look at the houses, they will have grey rectangular boxes on the walls with a green corrugated pipe coming out of it (Thats if they are not routed to the back of the house)
You can also look on the pavement to see if the tarmac/path has been altered. The infill runs at right angles to the house and usually goes up the side fence/hedge.

Little covers on the pavement with CATV on them.

ask the neighbours, someone will have it if it's available.
