Probable stupid question - obligation to stay with existing supplier?

I'm currently renting in a shared house (moved in 3 weeks ago), where the previous electricity and gas supplier was EDF. I want to set up an account, and looking at the comparison sites, and using knowledge of what the previous tenants paid, it seems I would be better off with a different supplier.

Can I just sign up for a new account through one of the affiliate sites (money supermarket, topcashback etc.), then call up the new company to provide a meter reading from when I moved in, or do I need to pay the old supplier (EDF) for the energy use from when I moved in until now, and take another reading for the new account to start from?

You need to pay your current supplier from the date you moved in until the date of the switchover which, if you started the process today would be several weeks away.

You call EDF 'the old supplier', whereas they are your current supplier. When you first used any energy, then you created a deemed contract for them to supply you - just the same as if you had signed a contract with them.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me. I'll give EDF a call to set up an account then look at switching options.
