You would still be better off going to the third party insurer, who would let you keep the car after writing it off, and you won't have the hassle of having to reclaim your excess off the third party.
    So how does that work?
I've already gone through my insurers. Who would possibly let me keep the car anyway.
All I want is the money to buy another car if it is a write off.

£700 sounds fair for the mileage. I'd push for a little more but not be too concerned if they refuse to increase it.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Cancelling what? What extra money?
    I don't follow, sorry..

cancel the claim with your insurer and go direct to the third party insurer. That way you'll get the money and the car, then you can sell the car and 'double' your money

A few years ago my Golf VR6 got written off, as it had been a cat D previously they paid me £1400. As soon as i was told that I stuck it on eBay (knowing i'd get the car back as well). The buyer picked me up, took me to the garage to collect the car, i drove it to his where we complete the sale (£900) and he then gave me a lift home.

If it was any other time I would but I'm right in the middle of moving house, area, countys, sorting out new schools etc.
I just want an easy life! :rotfl:
I'm just going to leave things as they are, if they let me keep the car or buy it back for cheap then I will talk to OH and let him deal with it.
If not then I will still have enough money to buy a little run around and save me about £200 a month in running costs, that is enough for me :D

    Your decision of course.

But if you followed the advice to cancel your claim and go to the third party you would have an easier life! And more money at the end of it (as you would get to keep the car to sell/repair cheaply etc), as well as saving you the hassle of getting your excess back.

Also check your policy to see what happens after a write off claim - some policies end then, meaning you are faced with getting a new policy when your NCD may have been (temporarily) reduced pending your insurer getting reimbursed.

I get what you are saying, I really do but I do not see phoning round everyone and cancelling everything that is already in place as making my life easier at this moment in time. a week ago maybe, in 2 weeks deffo, today, No. I'm confused enough as it is :o
I've got to claim back for buyin new car seats anyway and have a hire car on it's way so it is all in hand.
Thanks for the advice though. :)
  • Got the Assessor coming tommorrow morning, do they tell you there and then if it's a write off or not?

    Just thought I would update.
Car was written off, I was offered £440  and kept the car, scrapped it for £150 and bought myself a little P reg corsa for £300.
BUT liability is in dispute :(
Also I didn't have to pay any excess either.
