Paying off a '3' Contract

Does anyone know what will happen to my phone number if i pay off my contract early? My phone is locked to 3 and i am in no immediate rush to change networks or change my phone, i just want to reduce my monthly outgoings. When i came off my 'Virgin' contract a few years ago the sim just changed to a PAYGO which was fine as my phone number didnt change but will that be the case when i pay off my '3' contract? I'd rather not swap phone numbers.

All you will save by paying off the ETC is the VAT. If you are still wanting to use a PAYG phone you might as well stay in contract and use the inclusive minutes that you are going to have to pay for anyway.

The point is, i'm not really using it. I was once a heavy texter. I dont bother now. Dont really use my minutes either. I just want it for emergencies but dont want the hastle of changing the number.

It depends on what you want. You can
    • have the contract terminated and lose the number,
    • port the number to another network,
    • have your contract switched a PAYG at '3'.
However, I don't see how you can save anything by terminating the contract.

Is it a fact or a myth? I have never seen any reliably confirmation that it is the case at '3'.

Thinking of cancelling O2 contract... do i have to pay VAT on remainder?

I don't know-but surely whatever applies to one provider should apply to all-HMRC will not apply a different rule to each.

O2 charge VAT, Vodafone and Orange do not. Dunno about the others.
