Why call: 0845 602 7215?

I'm starting work on Monday...

I called the Job Centre to sign off but they told me to call this number: 0845 602 7215. I had to end the call suddenly so I didnt have time to ask why.

- Does anybody know what the number is for?
- Why would I need to call it if I am signing off?

Whilst I'm on here - is there anything else I need to do before I start work (other than sign off and ring up for my WTC)?

Ring it up, if its DWP, it should tell you in a recorded message something like "thank you for calling whatever service, the office/lines are currently closed, normal opening hours are blah blah"
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

  • 0845 602 7215 is the Job Centre Plus Benefits line

Are you in receipt of any benefits?, if so you probably need to advise them as your entitlement may change now you are in work.

    Not wholly unreasonable.

"Thank you for calling the Job Centre Plus, part of the Department of Work and Pensions... We are sorry but our offices are now closed..."

But why would the Job Centre tell me to call the Job Centre?

I'm no expert but I would imagine if you are starting work that some of these entitlements (or amount of the entitlement(s)) may change now that you are starting work.

I assume that the department who you were talking to at the time, did not handle the benefits side, and so gave you the number of a different department to call, so that you can discuss this aspect with them.
But why would the Job Centre tell me to call the Job Centre?
Because different departments may deal with different things, they may all be under the Job Centre banner and may even share the same central answering service out of hours, but some departments may deal with getting people work, other departments may deal with benefit claims / entitlements....etc its not unusual in any businesses or Govt / Council to have several different departments dealing with different aspects and having different external dial in numbers to reach them.

Its a bit like when you ring a company and a recorded voice tells you to dial '1' for Sales, dial '2' for billing enquiries, dial '3' to report a fault etc etc

Example, if I take a technical enquiry at work, I give them a different number to call as a different centre deals with technical enquiries (I work in purchasing).

Thanks, you've been a good help.

Now I just need to close this thing!
