Will I fail an MOT for this?

I wonder if you people can help me.

Its a Peugeot 206.
I have put tape over the top of the bulb to prevent glaring at motorists behind me. Light is still able to come out below it to light up the registration plate.
My questions are:
1.) Will this fail an MOT test?
2.) How do I get it repaired cheaply?
3.) Are there any online guides that tell you how to repair this yourself if you get the part form a scrap yard? I find it really hard finding anything on the internet to do with repairs cars.
4.) or does anybody know how to repair it?

1) If the number plate is adequately illuminated and there is no white light emitted to following drivers, it'll pass. Some MoT testers might be fussier than others though and ideally you'd need to see it in the night.
2) DIY.
3) You can get a Haynes manual on eBay (I paid £7 for a 306 one, including postage) or from your local library. Try getting the part from http://www.breakerlink.com
4) Essentially there will be a plastic cover on the tailgate, secured probably by some Torx screws (with a star-shaped head pattern). You'll need to buy a set of Torx drivers (about £5 - £10 but always handy if you own a French car), remove the panel - you might need to use a flat-bladed screwdriver to prise it up.
Once you've got the panel off, the plastic part will almost certainly be secured by more Torx screws so remove those and then screw it back in. Should be a dead easy repair as long as you dont mind poking around in the tailgate of the car, but no mechanical or electrical implications at all unless you start pulling out the wrong bits, e.g., the tailgate lock.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350 :eek:

Depending on the MOT Tester, it may fail because of sharp edges.This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0

Also if you meet a grumpy policeman he might give you a ticket for showing a white light to the rear when not reversing.
Unless you drive everywhere in reverse !
But thinking about that, if you did, you would still be showing white lights to the rear, ie: your headlights. Does that mean that if you reverse at night you have to turn your lights off ?0 -
You could tape over the sharp edges too. As long as the tape is stopping all light to the rear, you should be ok
You could put your black tape like this stuck to the red body and the black plastic.
Now to fix this will be really simple. All you do is phone scrappies until you find one you say you want the "black plastic trim which surrouds and incorporates the boot release button for a peugeot XXXXXXX"
Now you just have to work out how it comes off, I can see one broken screw hole in the red part from here, so there will be another screw on t'other side....and you may find there used to be a bit of white plastic on the other side of the hole in the red bit into which the screw would screw - you might need a new one from the scrap yard vehicle also, these little items you just put in your pocket as "accessories required".
Now the main difficulty will be if comes attatched to the boot release button, you can ascertain this for yourself now by undoing the other screw and see if it comes off or not. If is attached you will probably need to remove the interior grey trim which covers this area from the inside, should be a simple job of removing some small plastic screwhead covers and then unscrewing the panel. Then you will need to work out how to disconnect the release button from the mechanism and how to refit it. You may have to take the mechanism out aswell.
All of this will be (or should be) explained in the Haynes manual for the car. Which is a very useful thing to get for this and other small jobs.0 -
