How can I Password protect a Folder/File on my Laptop

Hi there
I would like to have one folder on my laptop that I can store stuff in.
Mostly it's just writings ramblings and notes, but some of the stuff is media files. I have some Personal mp3's that I would like to keep that way. (No its not Take That).
Can it be done with a free program?
I never though it would bother me until someone sent a short story to some of their mates.
