mechanic took car home without permission?
Options
Hiya,
bit trivial this but wondered if someone could advise me? i put my car into the garage this morning to have my driver side wingmirror replaced after someone hit my car smashing the mirror off and into 14 pieces over the weekend and scraping the whole side of my car whilst i was in bed
Garage advised if the part was late theyd keep the car overnight but would let me know, call never happened though! which is a bit annoying.... then i have just had to walk past the garage and my car is not parked up anywhere? its a tiny garage at end of a residental street so cars are usually parked up on the street in the day - no car park etc and only space inside for one car. The garage shuts at 5pm but there were 2 lads there working on another car on the ramp (this was 7:45pmish) ... so my car wasnt inside the garage....
so im wondering where my car is?
Has the mechanic got any right to take my car home with him overnight without my permission? and specially when he told me i couldnt legally drive it as the drivers mirror was a legal requirement? If he has what if something was to happen to it at his address or on the way there would he be liable or me?
Ive had nothing but bad luck with my car last 2 months and not knowing exactly where it is and whose got it has got me very anxious! Ive used this garage 4 times before and they were extremely helpful and reasonable ... maybe im just worrying too much!! but im quite protective about my car as its my lifeline due to ill health.

Is there a possibility they have a storageyard? My garage does as it's only small they have a holding car park place around the corner?DFW Nerd #awaiting number - Proud to be dealing with my debts!

Mine gets parked round the corner on the street, if his garage is full:D:D"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

well without question some mechanics drive the cars in their possession around, to the shops or to get food or whatever. one of the punters in my shop took his astra into the garage in cardiff and had it back with a boot full of parts collected from a vauxhall garage 15 miles away in bridgend!Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0

I dont think they have anywhere round there never seen anywhere they use as its all residental surrounding them and i had a good look and couldnt see it anywhere on the 2 roads surrounding it. Might just have to straight out ask him tomorrow where it was :-/
just would have prefferred him to ask me to bring it back tomorrow morning at 8.30am when they open if he couldnt do it today, im only 2 streets away.
eeek i think im just being a worry-wort lol0 -
but in saying that op i'd try not to be too anxious. even if the mechanic has taken it home i'm sure nothing will happen to it, it's probably safer sitting outside his house than it is outside the garage!
don't worry too much it'll be fine!Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0 -
Yeah, they could have parked it around the corner, in a yard, taken it home.... Just drop it into conversation if you're worried see what they say.0

I may be wrong but I think as long as you have an internal mirror you do not need an external one.0 -
If it is only a small garage, what are the chances that they can afford the insurance to cover them for driving any car ?
If the machanic is driving it without proper insurance, what happens if it is damaged will the garage be able to afford to cover the damage ?
When you go to collect the car, have a good check to see how many miles have been put on the clock and check for new damage. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
