Does a late payment by 3 days affect your credit history?

Hi,

I paid my credit card dues on the date it was due. There was a systems issue at the branch and I had to pay again after a couple of days. The bank has agreed to revert back the late payment and interest charges once the new statement has been generated.

However, I’m quite concerned about the effect that it might have on my credit history. One of the staff at the bank said that it shouldn’t affect my credit history but another staff remarked that all late payments will be marked in the credit history.

I’m looking to apply for a 0% credit card for my Christmas shopping and am really worried about the effect of this late payment on my new credit card application. Is there any way to confirm if my credit history has been affected? Also, should I take the risk and apply for a new credit card or should I hold back for a few more months. This is the only time a late payment has been made on my credit card.

Thanks,
Vetty

Yes. If the payment arrived after the statement date then it is a missed payment and will be in your credit file. Most lenders will ignore 1 missed/late payment so don't worry too much about it.

If you want to check your credit file then wait a month for it to be updated then get a credit report for the statutory £2.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • It depends... one late payment on my CC in '07 was not reported as it was the 1st time it'd happened and I contacted HSBC same day it was applied to have it taken off. I was toled that they couldn't be sure if it would be reported or not, but it wasn't.

Still, as other posted said, one late payment - provided there are no other major blemishes on your credit file(s) - shouldn't hinder you getting a 0% card. Though should try applying soon as Christmas is round the corner + leave enough time for the card and PIN to arrive (if you're successful of course).

You can order copies of your credit reports from the CRAs, but you'll never *know* if it's been "affected", merely whether a late payment has been recorded or not.

You may get better advice, targeted specifically at your provider, if you divulge which bank it is (assume both current account and credit card are provided by the same?)...unless it's a secret! ;)
