When should I change banks?

I am following Martin's advice regarding reclaiming bank charges and have a question.
I am currently with Barclays and have set up a new account with the Alliance and Leicester as recommended on this site.
I have sent off the first letter to request details of the last six years charges - no response so far but it is only a week.
The A&L account has much better terms than my Barclays account so I would like to move across sooner rather than later to take advantage.
So the question is - when should I move and should I leave the Barclays account open rather than closing it or should I continue to use Barclays until the bank charges are sorted?
Many thanks
Mark

If you get much better terms at A&L, move your account over ASAP. It's your choice whether you keep the Barclays account open or not. If you close it, I would do this after the claim (if you close it during the claim, they may be that little bit more awkward with you). How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
