Remember supermarkets and stores aren't in the oil and gas business, so if the oil is up to spec., go ahead and use it, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised about who actually produces the stuff.

Either get the halfords castrol oil deal, in the correct spec for your car, or else try Euro Car Parts online - They do 'carlube' oil which is absolutely fine for bog standard oil and is £15 for 5 litres. The halfords deal is about the best deal you can buy on the high street at that price. I've had a look at the wilkos stuff, and decided no.... They're a bit vague as to what spec it actually complies to.

Just one thing worth noting about the Castrol Magnatec from Hafords, although it is good oil, it is about £18 for a 4 litre container not 5 litres.
  • Just a quick update for anyone that is interested. I plumped for the Wilkinsons Everyday oil in the end and it seems just fine even in our high performance motors ( Old Polo and Ancient Micra).
  • Ok but was it 20w- 50 abit thick maybe ok for older cars?

Well with the limited information you have given that is the wrong oil for the Polo, Castrol suggest 5W30 for a 1996 - 2001 and 2001 - 2009 16V petrols, the Wilko is 20W50.

Castrol always tend to suggest their 5w30 synthethic for most engines now, I wouldn't use anything thinner than a 10w40 in this car.
