how long to charge a DECT phone?

I have a DECT phone in my bedroom which is being charged 24 hours a day by its charger, unless of course I forget to put it back on its charger base.

The base is only the charger, the main unit is in the lounge.

The charger seems to use 5 watts which costs roughly £5 a year.

I have a spare plug in timer which I could use to limit the charging to a few hours a day so what would be the effect on the phones batteries and the base unit if I only charged it for say, 2 hours a day.

The plug in timer only cost me £1, I bought 2 because it was a twin pack, cheaper than buying 1 even although I only needed 1.

What type of batteries does the phone take?

I replaced the deafult AA bateries in my DECT phone (they were lucky if they lasted 1 day off the charger) to 2900 NiHM AA's instead! it can now lay about for a week off the charger before it's flat! ^_^ and only takes 4h-6h to recharge.

Saves more money in the long run...

Its only my opinion and Im quite happy to be corrected, surely the phone in your bedroom wont be charging 24 hours a day, once it is charged fully then it stops charging and not using anything,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Also as it is a DECT phone, doesn't the charger base also act as the radio receiver/transmitter? Turn it off and you can't use the phone...

This is the extension in my bedroom. The main base unit is in my lounge, as I stated in my post.

There is a power supply plugged in all day, do they stop using electricity when the phone is removed from the unit, or when the batteries are charged up?

Anyway that is not what I wanted to know.

They'd either go flat or they wouldn't. In fact they probably wouldn't IMO.

I doubt you'll find anybody here who has tried this. I think the charger only draws any appreciable current when it is actually charging and that won't be all the time unless it is just a low level trickle which shouldn't use anything like 5w.

My suggestion if you are determined to try it would be to start at 1 hour power on and if the battery goes flat increase the time. Don't forget to measure how much power your timeswitch uses.
