Gigantic gas bill
Options
My latest gas bill for a quarter -- £269!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We live in a three bedroom house, are not extravagant with the heating. Our boiler is over 25 years old but surely that can't make THAT much of a difference. Or have gas prices gone up so much? Our yearly consumtion would suggest we live in a mansion.

Don't look at the price - look at the amount of gas that you have used and compare it with previous bills. Also make sure the "quarters" are the same length, give or take a day or two.
I don't think that figure is too unreasonable for a winter quarter, if that is for heat, hot water & cooking.0 -
what is your normal winter bill. We live in a simular sized house and use gas for cooking, water and heating and ours is 120.00. Yours sounds alot of money check that they havent used estimated figures0

I tend to agree with moonrakerz above that £269 is not unreasonable for a winter quarter.
'3 bedrooms' is not really the criteria to judge consumption. You can get tiny modern mid-terrace houses that fit that description, and huge old(and badly insulated) detached houses that also have 3 bedrooms.0 -
You should live in our semi, last year equivelant quarter was £369, this year £275, cos milder and we had cavity wall insulation.
A new condensing boiler would lower that too, but at a cost.

Ours was £185 (233 Units) this quarter for a medium size 4-bed detached with cavity wall and roof insulation, double-glazing and a 22 yr-old boiler. We're with Atlantic.
Room thermo usually set on 18 deg C but moved up to 19 or 20 for short periods of time if necessary.0 -
Were your previous bills estimated and were estmated as not enough and this bill is from an actual reading and so there was a shortfall to make up from previous estimated bills ??
If that makes sense!Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
Thanks all
I will check previous bills and see if they were estimated, they were quite high too, except for the summer one and we had been away for a month!
maybe need to change supplier.0 -
Hello.
Yes, think about a new boiler. We had a new condensing boiler installed (to replace our glowworm) and it saved us some. Last year (Winter period) we spent 438 units, this year (with the new boiler) we spent 195.
I realise that we can't really compare years like for like, but i don't think it's a coincidence that we replaced the boiler and spent 243 fewer units...
cheers

Yes, think carefully - a new boiler will be more efficient but will set you back a lot of money and are very complex. They tend to go wrong more often and some have to be serviced twice a year.
If you can squeeze a few more years out of your old one, that may be the best bet.0
