Central Heating Cover

A colleague at work asked me this, and tbh I'm not sure.
About 4 months ago he took out central heating cover. Apparantly they are supposed to do an initial inspection and then confirm they will accept you, but have so far not done this.

He has had a problem with his heating and when the engineer came to look at the boiler he said it needed too much work. They have offered to repay the 4 months payments made so far, and cancel the policy.

As it is now he faces a bill of several hundred pounds to fix the boiler, and he can't take out cover elsewhere because the boiler is broken.

His argument is that if he had been told earlier that he was not covered then he could have made other arrangements such as home emergency cover, but he was not given the opportunity.

I tend to agree, but would welcome your thoughts.

What do their T&Cs say? Is there a minimum time period before which the cover does not take effect? (It is not unusual for a period like 90 days to be required to elapse before the cover becomes effective).

30 days before you can make a claim.
It seems they should carry out the initial inspection almost as soon as the contract begins, but because of manpower issues they said they would do it later.
TBH this would have rung alarm bells with me straight away!

    Trying to find the T&C.

IMHO - if THEY are required to do the initial check and THEY neglected to do so then THEY are still liable. :)

Depending on what the problem is with his CH, it may not have been covered anyway.
He needs to read his terms and conditions first
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
