Guys,
not my area of expertise, so could do with a bit of help with this. I've tried various free/trial dvd ripper/decoders, but so far haven't found anything that will actually do the job.
Anyone got an recommendations for something free that will actually rip & decode full films (including the sound !!)??
cheers in advance

dvddecrypter will give you access to the raw VOB files, or dvdx (open edition) will decrypt, play and transcode the files. Both free.0

I'll answer the first one now, to play any of the output files you will need VLC media player

MPC Home Cinema's better anyways, but I do have both......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I am told that DVD Shrink is very good.0

I agree with MARTY99, DVD Shrink is brilliant. Used it loads of times, it does sometimes have a problem with some of the "security features " on some dvds... It will also shrink it down to just under 4.5GB so you are able to back up a copy of your favs0

right, I tried DVD Decrypter, which did the biz in terms of giving a pc-playable version (used Lion King for a trial run). However, when you get a folder full of separate .VOB files along with the associated other bits, how can you extract just the parts that make up the film so that they play back seamlessly ?? I tried popping them into a new folder and playing back from there, but 1. combined size was still around 5GB and 2. using this method you get a pause as the player ends one segment and starts the next.
To be clearer, what I really want to do is decode&rip, and end up with a single file that can be converted into .avi or .mp4 or a.n.other format, but still plays seamlessly and doesn't take up 5GB.....
I could do this using ULead and a video capture device (have done with vid camera clips) but don't want to have to do it in real-time (capture) + converting, IYSWIM...........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Ahhh yes DVD Decrypter is a 2-stage thing - first it actually gets the VOB files out for you, then you need to either play them as they are (in a playlist and swallow the pause) or re-encode them to a smaller format. But it is a much faster way to extract the files.
DVDx will do the rip and re-encode but it is a MUCH slower process. Slower than real-time depending on the quality you're re-encoding to!0
