I've been doing this. I found a 'recipe' when I was looking through old posts.
Basically I do it in thirds. I use one of the measuring scoops you get with the powder, so one third good powder, one third cheapy, (I'm using Tesco value) and one third soda crystals. I mix it up in another tub and use half of what they recommend. It works brilliantly.

    Hi newyorkcitybride,

There's an earlier thread where other Old Stylers have said how they mix their washing powder and how successful it is so I've added your question to it to keep the suggestions together.

I also mix soda crystals with persil bio and Asda smart price bio all in equal amounts. I can honestly say that I'm 100% happy and when I run out I'll be doing the exactly same again.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:

i use one persil tablet (colour) and a spoonful of soda crystals, plus i use vinegar in the fabric softener drawer.
I also keep tesco value powder in which i use for towels and bedding, cleaning cloths etc. Haven't braved it on clothes yet as worried it might fade them (that's why i use colour tablets) but am tempted as its so much cheaper!

  • Do most of you use powder rather than tablets? I've always used tablets but wondering if this is another way to save those valuable pennies

My problem is I have to be very careful what powder I use as all bio,s and even some non bios give me and the kids skin irritation. After sleeping on some sheets given to us by the MIL (washed in bold we found out later)son looked like he had been scalded across his whole body :(.
There are certain non bios I have found persil/fairy mostly and we buy those on offer, but recently took the plunge and tried Aldi's non bio tablets, brilliant. Cheap and work plus no skin problems. I use one tablet mostly and 2 if a really grubby wash or 1 tab and scoop of vanish (for some reason this doesn't affect our skins either).
