I use a packet of soda crystals [washing soda - approx 55p] with a large box of washing powder. We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0 -

Hi, Just been downstairs to fetch mine. Its in a blue and white bag, 1Kg size and says Soda Crystals on the front. Also has a picture of a plug hole, washing machine and cooker top.
I used to do as said above, buy a container (95p Asda) in my case, half fill with good powder (aerial), then a quater with own brand and a quater with soda crystals, then shake up and use as much as you need. The idea is you've bulked out the good powder.
The measurements don't have to be exact.
These other directions on the back of the packet for clothes washing.
I use this method somtimes but at the moment I've got a big box of aerial which was on offer at Tesco, it was about £5.00 for 5kg so couldn't resist, so I'm using that at the moment and not bulking out.
I have to say that I think the original aerial on its own is far better than the bulking out method, but that is sufficant, just my opinion.0 -
I buy 3kg tesco value £1.49, 3 bags of soda crystals and 3 kgs of something like a nice smelling bold when its on offer I then have 9kgs - in a big plastic thing from lakeland and it lasts forever and works really well.0

The soda crystals work out dearer then the value powder, what is the advantage of using them?
I have to know these things!?0 -
Half quantity here too. Rarely fails.0

If you use to much of the soda crystals it seems to clump too much in the drawer, bu they have excellent cleaning powers! So i prefer to use a third or less with them!0

I just use halve the recommended amount and give DD's clothers which have baby food stains a rub with vanish or similar before washing. if they are really badly marked or I'm doing some rank nappies I put washing soda in which seems to really help shift the stained to kingdon come items
OH was a strict follow the instructions on the box man and always put loads in as he said to use less made the washing smell manky and a huge dollop of fabirc softener as again it smelled horrid and was all hard so I diluted the fabric softener 1/3 softener and 2/3 water and let him carry on. As for washing powder I bought tablets and let him see the residue that got left all over his work trousers when the recommended amount didn't disslove properly.
We have now come to a beneficial agreement, he uses one washing powder tablet and I let him carry on putting his usual amount of fabric softener in. He just hasn't realised that its a more dilute form and I see no need to tell him. Everyone's a winner:rotfl:0 -
I had a new washing machine in October 2005 and it still looks brand new - no mould or gunge anywhere.
I use 1 tbs value powder, 1 tbs Daz and 1 tbs soda crystals. I use measuring spoons that I got in a cracker! :rotfl:
I put the powder straight into the drum.
I use white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment.
At the end of each wash, I leave the door and drawer open for as long as possible and then wipe inside the door seal with kitchen towel.0 -
Hi All,
Did a bit of a search but couldnt find a complete answer to my wondering...
Hope noone minds
Basically back in january when DH and I moved in together we went to makro and bought a large box of Bold washing up powder, 12kg for the price of £10 and it was on a special offer for something like £8...
Now not that we dont wash or anything :rotfl: but there is still quite a bit in it!
What I'd like to do is stretch it even further :A I read (somewhere) about using a value/own brand tub and mixing it in to eek it out, and something about soda crystals (i think?!)...
Can anyone tell me what kind of quantities of own brand and soda crystals (if it was even those!) I should add in to keep it going a fair while longer? I'd say the original box has still got at least 5kg in it! So I'd love to get it to stretch the full year! And then I will know for next year what I can do again!
Hope this has all made sense, and thanks in advance!
