If it turns out to be identity theft, you MUST go to the Police. Also, get in touch with all those banks that be defrauded and explain to them.

I would also change all my normal cards/accounts - at least, speak to your usual bank and explain to them.

  • what if they dont listen? and they demand money off me, i havent recieved any letter to my actual home address in london, but i think that they where opened in leicester at a old halls of residents, which had a shared box post.

Also ive looked everywhere and i cant find my passport. My parent thought that i have it, and i thought that my parents had it.

First, relax. If you are the victim of fraud you are not liable for the money. It will take a while to sort out as investigations have to be done but in the end you will not owe anything and your credit history will be cleared up.

    There are 2 possibilities.

    1) Experian have made a mistake and put other peoples defaults on your credit history. Perhaps because you have a name similar to somebody else and it got confused. If this is the case then your letter to them will clear it up.

    2) You are the victim of identity fraud. In this case writing to Experian is no use. You need to contact each of the companies listed and explain to them it has nothing to do with you. Once they have investigated and satisfied themselves that it is true make sure they tell Experian to remove the default.

Like I said this will take time but you will be ok in the end.
  • What is involved in this invesagation? Do i have to go court?? Also has not realising that my passport lost after a year and half of all the accounts opening made me liable??

    Ajay,

To protect yourself in future, just incase someone is running around pretending to be you try the following:

    Taking Identity Fraud in Hand.

No, it is highly unlikely you will need to go to court because you don't know anything about it. If it is an Experian error then they will do all the work for you. If it is fraud then the companies involved will do it all for you - you just need to tell them. In the latter case the police will need to get involved too. The companies involved may do this too, check with them.

Your passport may not be anything to do with it. It is not needed to carry out identity fraud, although of course it makes it much easier for the fraudsters if they have it. Even if it was used you are not liable unless you knew it had been stolen and did nothing about it.

I'd actually ask the companies involved if your passport was provided as proof of identity. If so you need to report it stolen and get a new one. If not you could have just misplaced it and it will turn up soon.

I know someone who had a similar thing happen to him, they used his old address and then the credit card companies caught up with him at his current address and he was petrified!

Just so that you know he notified the police and the credit card companies involved and after a bit of time it all got sorted out! It was a bit of a worry for him as I'm sure that you know but it all turned out fine - good luck x

  • Thanks you for this really great advice, and having a hall of resident with shared mail box, is not the way to go.

Does anyone know how long the entire process could take?? Ive got a industrial placement with Lloyds TSB starting in June, and i cant work there because of bank laws until its removed.

    Ajay,

It could take a while, however your placement should be ok as long as things are well underway.

I had this problem with one of my students a few years ago.
