Lovely place. I camped out at Xicacel (spelling?) which is a beach just down the road from Tulum. It's all a short bus ride from the tourist madness (and lovely airconditioned malls) of Cancun. When I was there though Tulum was just a beach with some great Mayan ruins on the cliffs -no hotels or anything....
What more would you like to know?0 -
Short bus ride from Cancun I thought our tranfer from Cancun was around 1 1/2hrs, still not problem.
While we we're in Las Vegas at xmas we had a mexican taxi driver that told us there where some pyramids in the Tulum area which I'm guessing is the ruins you refer to? I'd love to have a look around them as that sort of thing does interest me although my wife will be bored ****less it'll get us out and about rather than just sitting in the sun baking all day.
Although we are all inclusive whenever we have been AI in the past we have eaten out a few times during our holiday, I'm guessing this is possible here?
Any other hints or tips you may think relevent I'd love to hear.
Thanks,

tulum ruins are beautiful, overrun with tourists from cancun though so get there early. make the trip to coba - fantastic ruins, still hidden in the jungle, with a pyramid you can climb (unlike most others in mexico). it's about 30 mins by taxi - there are daily buses but they don't always run (had to get a taxi out of coba as the bus didn't turn up!) and there are lots of organised tours.
also go to the centoes - grand cenote is a short cab ride and great. if i go back i want to go dos ojos which looked amazing and people recommend highly.
there are lots and lots of nice restaurants in town (so not directly on the beach) - lots of italian food and others. it's not that big to walk up and down the main strip and look at what you like.
have a great trip - it's a gorgeous place!:happyhear0 -
Sorry - I mean that where we stayed was a short bus ride from Cancun - around 30-45 mins. Tulum was another bit on top of that so I guess your estimate is probably about right.
By short - I'd better explain that most of the journeys we did whilst travelling around Mexico were like 8-10 hours in buses!! So 45 mins seemed like a quick commute!
here's the archaeological site:

Tulum has some of the loveliest beaches I've seen! The ruins do get very busy and to be honest it can get so hot that the only option is to go early (I mean EARLY! Most of the tours will arrive 8.30am)
Definitely go to Gran Cenote/Cenote Azul and if you can get further afield Cenote Manatee which is at Tank-ha is amazing - the cenote empties out in to tank-ha bay and the snorkelling is amazing!
If you want some more info try tulum.info or playa.info - they're really good sources of info and a lot of the people who post on the message boards have been there many many times!
Oh yeah....I'm off to Playa del Carmen in 23 days so I'll be getting Tulum sand between my toes at some stage during my trip!0 -
we went there just after heavy rains - cenote manatee was flooded and full of nasty algae - so disapointed! the beach there was stunning.... cenote calavera just didn't match the view (even if there were bats!)Ali_UK wrote:Definitely go to Gran Cenote/Cenote Azul and if you can get further afield Cenote Manatee which is at Tank-ha is amazing - the cenote empties out in to tank-ha bay and the snorkelling is amazing!:happyhear0 -
