Digital SLR

Hey all

I was hoping to get into photography and was looking at a 'budget' DSLR but unsure on where to start, what to look for, anyway I have narrowed it down to the following three, basically on size and price, if anyone can offer any advice that would be really helpful, thanks

These are not DSLR cameras - not that they are bad just different. Try looking at this link for information.

A good 2nd-hand Sony A700. Top quality images.

Try and get a Canon 1000D. Great SLR camera.

I bought the Sony NEX-5N when it came out about a month back and it's superb but as someone pointed out it's not a DSLR, but more like an 'in-between' Point-and-shoot and DSLR.

It's great and better than the Sony DSC HX9V and DSC HX100V which I was happy with overall but was annoyed by the lack of RAW image format and interchangeable lense. All of these issues were resolved in the NEX-5N as well as it featuring sweep panoramic and 1080/50p video recording.

You could try the Canon 550D which is quite nice and takes great video too, but if you're new to photography you're probably better getting either the initial Sony NEX-5 (not the 5N) or even the Sony DSC HX100V which has 30x optical zoom as well (if I remember rightly). It looks like a DSLR but technically is not, but it's a good way to get started.

not sure on your budget but I would seriously join talkphotography.co.uk (photo forum) and have a look on the for sale area, nikon D5000 for around £350 which is pretty good. I would seriously consider used rather than new if your starting out, I would also head down to your local jessops or alike and handle the sonys (if you must), canons and nikon to see which feels better. You tend to stick with one brand due to buying lenses etc so you want it to be the right brand.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

Thanks for all your help guys, really struggling now to find one thats within my budget and has all the standard things, such as flash etc. But then I think if I am out taking photos, will I need a flash?

Also, you know those photos where the shutter slows down, so for example when a car headlights go past and it shows them as one line, can any digital camera do them or do I need a specific one? I want to be able to experiment with images

    thanks again
