OK. What the supplier *should* have done is to send a "to the occupier" letter whenever the previous account was closed. Did that happen and did you respond? If you did were you asked for an opening reading? Did you provide an opening reading? Which supplier BTW and which particular tariff did you select (important - see previous post)?

A lot of questions but all straightforward stuff.

The tariff is important because it sets the price. Are you either on an online tariff or have registered for online billing? If so you can enter meter readings online (as often as you like). Depending on the supplier, entering a reading should cause your account balance to be updated on-screen.

Check out a Consumer Focus accredited website to ensure you are on a competitive tariff.

I'm so sorry folks, I lost track of this thread. I'm in NI so we have limited suppliers. I phoned the gas company on the day the ex said he was cancelling the account but they couldn't talk to me and instead told me to await a 'dear occupier' letter.

I had a choice of 2 tarrifs so chose the cheaper one. We had been with Phoenix who are the only company here that can connect your house to gas (I think). The ex had only recently switched from Phoenix to Firmus and the switch from oil to gas only happened a year ago, the swicth of providers was around 6 months ago so there's no historic data that I can get access to.

Yes, I can provide meter readings etc but as it's such a new system I have no idea if my consumption is up or down if you know what I mean?
