I am posting this on behalf of my husband.
He has worked as a joiner for the past 10.5 years and has recently been advised that the company want to half the work force and have consequently asked for some voluntary redundancies. They have not advised what he would be entitled to and i have explained to him that he can not make this decision until he is armed with the full information. He is due a consultation today.
There is currently alot of speculation over what he would be entitled to. Do people being made redundant get a redundancy payment plus notice to work payment or these the same thing? If he puts in for it can he be turned down? Are there any questions that he should be putting forward to his manager? Should he be entitled to time away from work for interviews? It is a small company so I presume that whatever he gets will be the bare minimum.
Thanks for your help and support. Its a very complicated arena.

There's a redundancy pay calculator here:

fairly straightforward just depends on his age. The employer should not be expecting people to make such decisions without the financial information however - they should provide estimates. Are they paying the statutory minimum or offering an enhanced package, for example?
Whether he gets a notice payment or is required to work his notice depends on what it says in his contract and/or what the employer decides and/or what your husband agrees to.
Yes if he applies for VR it can be turned down - there is no legislation governing VR exercises - they are entirely under the control of the employer, so only they can answer the questions you are posing, which are all perfectly valid and the employer should be able to answer..0 -
Thanks alot for your help. It's alot to take in and the more searching i do on the internet the more confused i become. The meetings didnt go ahead as planned and they have been told they may go ahead tomorrow instead. We have basically decided not to worry about it until we are armed with the full facts.
Thanks again.0
