help on set up water/gas/electricity/broadband?

Hi everybody and thank you in advance for your help.

I'm a international student in Leeds, my mate and I just moved in a private accomodation (typical english mid terraced house with two bedrooms - we'll stay there for sure until the end of the academic year) and we need to decide which company we should call to set up our bills.
The agency adviced us "Glide" to do this, but I think it'd be better and cheaper just to call each service and set up everything by ourselves.

At this point, because we're not english and we are not very comfortable with english's companies in those field, can you advice us a company for gas/electricity/broadband with a good deal which maybe you have happily been with?

last question, should we pay for the TV license even if we are not whatching it just because the last tenant left it?

Again, thank you very much for your help which we really need :)

You're right. It's better and cheaper to arrange each service yourself rather than going through Glide.

This site has excellent guides on all of the above here:

You only need to pay for a TV licence if you watch live TV. If you don't intend to watch it it's probably best to disconnect the TV.

    Hi Cell,

I hope that you read your meters on the day you moved in and if the letting agent was not there with you that you have also given them a copy of the meter readings. This will at least ensure you don't get charged for the previous occupant's usage. And if you do actually change gas/elec/water supplier then you will need to give them the correct meter readings, too.

When you research the different utility companies, try to avoid phoning on tel nos which begin with 0845 and 0844 and 0870 etc. They can be expensive calls, especially on mobiles. The ONLY freefone no. which begins with 08 is 0800.

There is a website: SAYNOTO0870.COM which gives alternative geographical (landline) numbers to the 08 tel nos. Just type in the company name and scroll down the many, many numbers! Often I've used this website and contacted the utility company or whatever via an 0800 number - saves me paying for the call!:)

    Good luck.

Saynoto0870.com is a brilliant website. But remember that the majority of mobile operators charge for calling 0800 'freephone' numbers. Instead go through 0800buster.co.uk to make calls using inclusive minutes.
  • Thanks for the heads-up re 0800buster.co.uk. I'm on pay-as-you-go mobile so I won't be able to benefit from it but I'll let friends know who are on mobile phone contracts...

On most PAYG tariffs, 01/02/03 numbers are much cheaper than any 08 number, even the 'freephone' 0800 numbers.
