Bristol to Carlisle by Train

Hi, I would like to travel on Feb 10th (Saturday) to Carlisle and back by train, getting there for about 1.30pm and travelling back after 5.15pm. I want to go with my son (13) and I have a family railcard. I have tried splitting the journey and looking at single tickets but can't get the price much below £75. Any help or advice from more experienced train travellers would be very welcome

Thanks

    For the Yeovil Town game?

Bristol to Birmingham Depart 7:29 Arrive 8:57 Virgin Trains £11.50
Birmingham to Carlisle Depart 10:03 Arrive 12:57 Virgin Trains £12
Carlisle to Birmingham Depart 17:21 Arrive 20:06 Virgin Trains £12
Birmingham to Bristol Depart 21:10 Arrive 22:43 Virgin Trains £9

    Total - £44.50

That's for one adult at normal prices
From the looks of it you have to have the break in Brum both ways as the trains from Bristol to Carlisle via Brum don't have cheap tickets on both segments
