So, is it better to source a single supplier rather than use the likes of d*gate etc?

I found one seller early on via DHGate but I'm convinced they turned out to be as I explained above and rushed off to the market to source the goods. The goods turned out to be very slightly different to what they were advertsing but it was ok and I was able to sell them with no problems.

The factory I currently deal with was found via Alibaba. I posted a product sourcing request on Alibaba and had hundreds of replies from all sorts of Chinese businesses. I finally filtered out the one we use. I am lucky enough that I have a friend who has business contacts in China and he was able to get them to check out the factory for me.

Unless you have personal contacts, I don't know how else you would find sellers without going through sites like DHGate and Alibaba. Global Sources is another one that people say is more professional.

Most Chinese sellers, good and bad, are listed on most of these websites anyway. No matter where you find them, you need to be cautious and check them out as best you can everytime. Make sure you get samples first, try to pay by Paypal, etc, etc.

I recommend you taking a look at this forum - http://www.thewholesaleforums.co.uk/forum - it has a lot of useful info and advice that you should find helpful.

Best to try to get to know the supplier, over time you will be be able to have a good idea how reliable they may be. Yeh you probably could still get burnt if they a good liar hence only only hand over money you can afford to lose and better still try to make a journey to china if your looking to place a big order.

Try not to look for a bargain but aim at looking for a good supplier, the cheap price will enviable come as you increase your order.
