Why can't I run CD in my laptop?

Sorry about cr*p title!!

Basically I have an ACER Travelmate laptop and want to load the CD software for my new Samsung Digital Camera. I put the CD in the slot thing and it doesn't run automatically. So I've tried to go down the manual method of going to My Computer and clicking on the D drive (launch.exe is not in C drive) but D drive is empty. I've also had the photos put on a CD from Boots and tried to open that to view the photos but the same thing happens (not opening/running). Is there something wrong with my laptop or is it me?

Try another disc, see if a normal music CD (say) will run.

Another tip - I never bother installing camera software - I find the Windows picture wizard covers my downloading needs and is pretty foolproof... plus the photo editing software you get is never much good :)

(I'm assuming you have Windows XP)

Sometimes to solve the autorun problem you have to edit the registry, If you do edit the registry beware that this may cause more problems if done incorrectly

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.

    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

    3. Expand the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

    4. On the File menu, click Export.

    5. In the File name box, type backup of drives key, and then click Save.

Note You can restore this registry subkey by double-clicking the backup of drives key.reg file that you saved.

    6. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, click the Volume{GUID} folder under Drives, where GUID is a 32-character hexadecimal globally unique identifier.

Note If you have more than one CD-ROM drive in the computer, an additional Volume{GUID} folder is listed for each drive.

    7. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click Drive Type.

    8. In the Value data box, type 1 or 2, depending on the drive type, and then click OK.

The drive type should be 1 if it is a CD-R and 2 if it is a CD-RW.
    9. Quit Registry Editor.
  • How do I view the photos on my camera and save them if I don't install the camera software? I want to take photos of stuff for ebay, but need the photos on my laptop (?) so I can download them to my listing?

Sorry but I don't think I can risk doing all that other stuff J Davies - I'm a complete technophobe !

Just plug the camera in via USB cable, wait for XP to recognise it - ballon should say device is now ready to be used etc, open my computer, and the camera should be listed in "devices with removable storage". open it up and find your pics,
copy paste / drag & drop the jpeg files to your desktop/my documents etc.

as frivolous fay says - camera software isnt worth bothering with - you dont need anything to get your pics off the camera - just let XP find it.

If using XP then XP should recognize the camera, so connect the USB lead to the PC then the camera then turn camera on and voila the camera should be recognized, then you may get a prompt of what you would wish to to, Go to the folder on the camera and then select the ones you want and then Edit Copy to Folder and select the MY Pictures folder and then hit copy.
