debit card purchase

I ordered a xmas present online on Thursday, and collected it from store on Friday.
I paid by debit card, and the visa secure page where you put your password in popped up, but closed itseld back down and the page then said authorised.
the transaction is not showing online on my internet banking, and the amount has not been reserved in the normal way. Normally i've found it would say balance x amount but only y amount available.
Did something go wrong with the transaction, or will they just take the money eventually
Thanks

Online banking can throw up challenges from time to time.... You could check online or in branch in a day or so. If the store that supplied your goods is short, guess they will contact you.0

Think they must have changed the authorise bit because the last few online purchases ive not had to type in password. They have all been authorised and gone through as normal without the password. I dont know why as surely it makes it less secure.0

For the past few weeks I've noticed that payments by both Debit and Credit card (a couple over £three figures) ........ do exactly that. You get the normal advance dialogue to the effect your Bank is being contacted and you will need to authorise. But then an authorisation page comes up - there's a timer indicator with 'processing' - and it authorises itself. With no secondary input from me.
I've assumed there's been a bit more logic built in to differentiate between 'low risk' and other cases. But it does seem to erode the basic 2nd level of security somewhat. You've triggered me to do a bit of research and (both Debit / Credit cards are Halifax) find the following :Halifax wrote:Halifax Secure is a service offered by Halifax in partnership with Visa International Services Association and MasterCard® International. This service offers more secure Internet shopping, using your preferred form of Internet payment – your Halifax credit or debit card. The service will assess each transaction and your card details are either automatically verified or, where a transaction is deemed to be high risk, you will be required to provide information for further verification. The Halifax Secure service only applies to online purchases at participating retailers.
But - in all cases - the available balance has been immediately reduced. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
thank you for your replies, it was my Natwest debit card that i paid with, and i notice from other threads that their system was down over the weekend, could the debit have been delayed in anyway by this?
Thanks0 -
it was bothering me that the money hadn't gone out so last night i rang natwest who advised me that the transaction had failed part way through so there was no way tesco would be able to take the money, and that i should contact them to arrange to pay.
Checked online banking again this morning, only to see that the £119 had finally gone out! Pleased i didn't contact tesco straight away!!0
