MBNA not sending replacement card?

My husband has a credit card with MBNA which he has had for a number of years. In August he contacted them to increase his credit limit in order to partly fund some home improvements. They duly increased the limit. His old card expired at the end of September and we haven't been sent a new one. This has happened before, so we weren't unduly worried. However, he rang them on Saturday only to be told that as they are pulling out of the credit card market in Europe, they wouldn't be issuing new cards to anyone, once their old ones expire. He has not received any notice of this from them at all.
I then rang to discuss this with them, as looking at the card agreement it appears they have to inform him if they aren't going to send another card. The man I spoke to said the account had been cancelled as the card had not been used for nearly a year. It hadn't been, but in August we transferred money off the card into our current account, so there's a balance of about 2.5k on the card.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any way we can make them issue a card? We have got to pay the balance of a kitchen which we would never have had installed, had we known they were going to stop his card. Why did they increase his limit to 8k only a month before?

Help please!

Mine expired at the end of September and was replaced with the MBNA
American express card. They are definately replacing cards when they expire but not taking on new customers.

Also it is correct if the card has not been used for 12 months then it will not be renewed irrespective if you have done a BT.
  • Would he now be classed as a new customer then?

Just experienced this myself. Got an MBNA card in August, was using it without any problems for a month when the chip suddenly stopped working. Ordered a replacement which was sent out within a week, used the card for a week and chip stopped working again, (can only assume it's due to a new wallet i got although other credit cards seem unaffected) anyway, ditched the new wallet and requested another replacement, a week later, nothing, called up to check on it, was told nothing had been ordered so they said they'd send a replacement again, another week, nothing, called up, same again, another week later and after 3 calls i've finally been told they're no longer replacing lost / damaged / expired cards.

My OH and I previously had MBNA cards that we used for balance transfers only. They had not been used for over 12 months and when our cards expired, we both received letters to say MBNA would be not be sending new cards and the accounts would be closed.

I have asked for confirmation in writing that the accounts are settled with the credit agencies.
