I would imagine many of us have iPhones and even the lucky ones amongst us have iPads and there are many free apps so why don't we all list what free apps we are playing :)

If you download the "Free App a Day" app or the "Game Channel" app (both of which are free), you can get many free apps every day! No catches, other than sometimes the apps are a bit rubbish - although this is more than balanced out by the good ones.

Also, there is another free app called "App Shopper" which shows free and reduced priced apps.

The only problems I find (other than rubbish apps) is the fact that I download so many free apps that I fill the memory of my iPhone/iPad :rotfl:

Not got an iphone but do have an ipod. I have a few apps on and have not paid for a single one!

    I have...

    Ebay
    Kindle
    Amazon
ibooks (itunes version and yes, there are some free books on the site)
Starbucks (for selecting dinks and looking at nutritional info)
    Journey Planner (for London travel)
    Tubes (tube map)
    Nike Training (gym workouts)
    Last FM
Sportify (not actually used this one yet!)
    Wikipedia
Random Pose (good for drawing the human body)
    Physio Bob
    Learn Muscles
TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine, not actually used this yet.)
3D4's medical illustration (amazing pictures of the body- well, most of them are!)
Mc Q's medical questions (great for testing yourself on human anatomy/physiology)
    Musculosceletal 3D quiz (as above)

I have to say I don't tend to use them much, just the camera and music player, I don't have wifi where I live and rarely get onto it and so don't tend to look for any additional apps as and when I need them and just use my computer to update the music I own. Do wish it was easier to search for new apps though as its a bit of a mindfield to search through absolutly everything and don't see the point or relevence of most of it.

This may be true on many platforms (looking at android in particular) but the likelihood of an iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) app containing malware is so low that one can ignore it.

The philosophy of openness that google pursue means there is no centralised app store and so anyone can upload anything for distribution. However apple take a very different approach by controlling the whole app ecosystem. All apps are reviewed before being distributed in order to ensure that malware does not get on to the platform. In any case where the review process misses something (as happened once recently I think) apple can quickly delete the app from their store, and remotely uninstall it from any devices that have downloaded it.

Some people object to Apple's "walled garden" approach and say they should be free to put whatever software they like on their device. Those who feel strongly enough to care about this are usually tech savvy enough to avoid rogue developers, eg through researching them before installing. However vastly more people who use android do so for other reasons and these are the ones who need to be educated the most about malware. iOS users can largely rest assured that if they get an app from the AppStore (and there are realistically no other ways for the technologically unsophisticated to get them, so one can extend the argument to say if they have an iPhone) then malware won't be an issue.

Note that other platforms (blackberry, Nokia, windows phone etc.) may or may not suffer from malware, I don't know how their app distribution works. This post should not be read as iPhone is better than android. The two companies merely have different philosophies and one is more secure than the other from a malware point of view. As this is a thread about free iOS apps, the malware warning is not needed.
  • Back on topic, I rate the following:

    Epicurious - recipe app
Dropbox - wireless syncing, may be soon bettered by icloud
    Shazam - name that tune
    TV Guide - obvious
    wikipedia
TanZen - free game at the moment, though wont be forever

I have Instagram, and it's meant to be the bees knees but I haven't really got into it yet
And finally, some Orange apps - Orange Wednesday and Orange film To Go - these mean you don't need to text to get your code for 2 for 1 tickets on a Wednesday, or a free download on a Thursday. I think this saves a few pennies, but don't quote me on it.

    As most have said:
    Facebook,
    BBC News,
    Echofon (for twitter)
Why does no one else use WhatsApp ? It's free texting and messaging if you have wireless at home, great if you're on pay as you go !
Foursquare (find out about the local area)
    Skype (free calls and IM)
    Instagram (photo editing and sharing)
    Photoshop express (photo editing)
PhotoSynth (panoramic photo stitching and sharing)
    Wikipedia
Sleep Cycle (this really does work)
ITorch (brilliant for finding your way in the dark)
    Words with Friends (like scrabble)
    Bejewelled
TubeMap (Good if you're a londoner)
Waze and Skrobbler (Free Sat Nav)
    Google and Google Places
XE (currency conversion like the website)
    RunKeeper
    Google Earth
    4oD and ITV Player
    TV Guide

Yikes, 25 apps there and that's not even 10% of my total.. Oops!
Not all of these are free, but most are. Some apps are genuinely worth paying for though.

I have an iPod Touch, so of course I can only use these apps with wireless connection eg. in my house and also at my workplace.
The two I use daily are:

    Ping Chat
    and
    HeyTell

My daughter lives in Australia and has an iPhone, so these apps are fantastic!
HeyTell, just record a voice message, when you release it, it is sent straight to your contacts phone.
Ping Chat...type quick message, or send a picture or video instantly to your contact's phone
