M&S have a sale every week.
  • Oh I know! But this is a big one as it will be the last before christmas, to clear out many lines to make room for the christmas ones.

i remember when they had a couple a year, now it's not to walk in and see a sign hanging somewhere for a sale

I saw a lovely shawl in M&S Westfield E15 for £40 about a month ago - decided to leave it and wait for the next sale as there was a whole rack full of them...but haven't seen them at Lakeside or Marble Arch since, nor online when I checked just now.... Strange how there seem to be endless rows of different styles in the largest stores, but just 7 designs online?

    M&S = DFS

How can you trust a company with a sale every couple of weeks? Thorntons are just as bad - hyped up prices, lowered in ever more frequent and desperate sales to make things look bargains when they're not.

They say their sales figures are right down,I think they are getting a bit desperate.

I think actually it was a policy decision made many years ago. In the distant past, they had new lines in about 4 times a year, and big sales that dragged on for weeks at each turn around.

Now, lines are stocked for much shorter periods of time, so there is a much quicker turn over of stock and designs. The logical conclusion of this is that they will want to clear stock for new lines more frequently, so there are more sales, but with fewer lines, and lasting for usually just a few days in stores until stock is reduced right down and cleared.

They used to be criticised for being stodgy, being too slow to respond to high-street fashion, and running lines for so long that you were always seeing someon wearing the same pair of trousers as you. They changed their approach many years ago to respond to these criticisms.

And on the contrary, I think they are doing quite well. About 15 years ago, there was talk of them being taken over by a French group (can't remember the name), or even by the quite dreadful Philip Green (think BHS, Top Shop etc etc.). The fact they they are a highly profitable company again, with no rumours of take-over bids, surely vindicates the change in their sales policy?
