I'd go for the netbook - much better value for money and more versatile. Basic cheap tablets aren't really worth it IMHO due to the fact that they tend to have have resistive rather than capacitive screens, low RAM, WiFi is only b/g (less range and speed than n) etc... Now things would be different if Amazon were to release the Fire in the UK as it seems to be a good 7" tablet for not too much money, but for of course when don't know if or when it might arrive here.

Edit: Carphone Warehouse are currently doing the Archos 70 for £99. It's a 7" tablet, you might want to go and have a look at it in-store. Again the specs aren't the best (but better than the Disgo) and at that price, worth considering if you don't mind the smaller screen.

I'll put in a warning about CarPhoneWarehouse and Archos kit...

I got a cheap Archos 7 tablet from them which curled up it's toes. They point blank refuse to honour their Sale of Goods Act responsibility and handle repairs and just direct you to Archos. Archos make you pay the post to them and insist on an original receipt. I decided it was easier to just accept that rather than go through some unknown process to enforce my legal rights and have found that Archos are not exactly speedy in their handling of returns. I've been lucky as they can't provide a replacement A7 and have offered an A7C (capacitive screen) instead which I've accepted but haven't yet received.

Do not buy any resistive screen tablet if you expect to do more than use it as a simple media player. Control is very hit and miss - more miss in fact.

How long ago did you buy this though, sale of goods act is not some kind of magic wand you can just wave and expect it to work

Under six months ago. They handle repairs for some kit but routinely direct you to the manufacturers for other stuff (or so they said).

    initial eMail extract..
    Dear xxxx,

Thank you for your email . At present the Carphone Warehouse is not able to carry out repairs on tablets that we sell . Instead we would direct you directly to the manufacturer of the item to discuss the matter further. I am afraid that I am not able to supply any contact details for Archos as they prefer you to log into their website. I have included the website address, : http://www.archos.com/home.html?country=gb&lang=en.

In order to contact them you select the support and account function from the menu bar across the top of the website and it directs you to sign in from there.

If you have anymore enquiries or would like to contact us about another matter, please do not hesitate to respond to this email. We are also available between the hours of 8:00 and 20:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 till 17:00 on Sunday, if you wish to speak on the phone on 0800 276 1373.

    Regards

    After pointing out SOGA obligations.
    Dear xxxx
    Thank you for your email.

I am sorry to hear your experiencing issues with the Archos Tablet.

As it is over 28 days since your purchase then as previously advised we would advise you to contact Archos directly . I see my colleague provided you with the correct details.

This is because they have a technical team who will troubleshoot the issues with yourself. If there is a fault confirmed then Archos will arrange for the repair or replacement of the tablet.

    Kind Regards

Ah right, looks like they were trying to just fob you off. Why even mention the 28 days, would have thought that was there policy for unwanted gifts or to return an item bought in error, as long as it goes back in original condition, most place now have there own 14 - 28 return policy.

If carphone have no facility to repair or even look at an item, then it should be upto them to send it off to Archos not the other way around, as your contract is with them (as in you bought from them. not from Archos).

As to OP original question, the HP notebook would be better, more versatile.
