helping Granny

This is my first post so hope this is the right place to ask for advice, my son is really worried about his great gran living alone now as she is 92 years old, he has said he is willing to move in with her, the question is, as she lives in a council property we think she gets her rent and council tax paid(she has never told us and we have never asked as she has always been independant) if he moves in with her will she then have to pay rent and council tax, my son does work full time but is on minimum wage.

Check whether the great grandmother is claiming Attendance Allowance (AA). If she is (either rate) then any other people’s income is disregarded for the purpose of Income in Housing B and CTB. If she is not receiving AA then she may be entitled to it (make claim – 1 month to appeal). If not entitled to AA then his income would be considered and an appropriate amount would be reduced from benefit. She may also be reviving PC Guarantee and if living alone, receiving AA and no one is paid Carer’s Allowance for looking after her she may get additional premium (the severe disability premium). If she gets this premium then it would likely stop if another adult moved. You can see CAB or welfare rights to go over this information. Someone needs to check what the great grandmother is claiming or possibly entitled to. There is a legal duty to inform the local authority/benefits department of a change of circumstances.
Don't thank me, thank my post :T

Does she actually want him to move in with her?

The fact that she lives in a council property has nothing to do with getting her rent paid and you'll need to ask her what benefits she gets.
  • Thanks for the reply's, we are going down to see her tonight, I dont think she claims any benefits but will find out later, and yes she wants him to move in she has been saying shes been feeling a little scared for some reason in the evenings.
