I'm still laughing (through the tears :o ) about buying Mitsubitshi tomatoes..... thanks for all your replies and tips. I'll have a look for Cirio.

I think they are the best too. Tuffins (if you have one anywhere near) have them at 4 tins for £1.49 at the moment :)

Not your fault the supermarkets are hardly going to publicise it are they?

There's a large canning factory near me, in the staff shop you see all sorts of brands labelled up from the same batch, something Tesco sell as a value item will be another supermarkets normal stuff!

One thing l have learnt is to make my own pasta sauces for a fraction of any jars and so much nicer:

Tin of chopped tomatoes - can be value range :D
    Medium Onion
    Clove of garlic
    Teaspoon of fennel seeds
Tablespoon of dried basil or dried mixed herbs (tastes better with fresh but not always available)

Place the onion, garlic and fennel seeds in a blender with a 1/4 of the jar of tomatoes. Blitz up and then add to the rest of the tomatoes.

Add salt, pepper, chilli to taste and mix with cooked pasta. Gorgeous! :D

Same here, I now make my own pasta sauce using
the passata that comes in jars and adding onions and italian herbs, tastes much nicer :)
  • passata is basically just sieved toms. I buy morrisons basic tomato juice at 37p litre, just as good use what I need and freeze the rest in small containers.

Tesco have the Parioli tomatoes (pack of 4) priced at £3.79 today an they are on a buy 1 get 2 free offer. Works out about 32p per can.
  • Thanks for sharing that - I didn't know that Napolina were Princes either! I haven't bought Napolina for a long time, too expensive so I've been buying Smart Price. Knowing this, I will continue to do so or if I want some 'posh' ones I'll buy Cirio!

I have been trying to buy these in my local Tesco for the last week, constantly sold out

Have started to stock up on the Heinz Chopped Tomatoes from Asda instead, £1.50 for 4 cans.

    I never knew!
But then again, I never looked - other than to glance at the price, flinch, & pat myself on the back for bying cheaper. Hm. If I must buy tomato in Tesco, Parioli it will be. :j
That said, I tend to buy slabs of tinned chopped tomatoes at Costco, which work out at about 25p a can if I sort of overlook the petrol. (I work quite hard on not making Special Trips but the family flinch as they see the various for-the-stockpile items emerge from the boot!) :D

Absolutely ! really worth checking out the cheaper brands and save some cash too.

I noticed in my local T express this morning that a pack of 4 Napolina tomatoes is £ 5.09 !!! Rip off.
Im sure you can get 12 for that in costco ;)

I didn't know that about Napolina! I buy our pasta from the Italian grocery store that we are lucky to have 5 mins away, massive range and it's tastier too, I get 10 bags mix and match for £7.50 but there is a cheaper range and a more expensive range too.
