hi all

have been reading some of the threads on here and it has encouraged me to add my own thread and maybe i can get some advice along the way.
at present i owe

k and co, £258
post office master card, £1342
shapely figures, £212
overpayment of tax credit (08/09), £259
santander credit card, £1697
studio £40.00

at the moment i am going through problems with santander due to the fact that they closed my account on the basis that i am not using it. which is fair enough as i have had the interest frozen for over a year and had an agreed payment of £30 a month, which i was paying. however since the closed the account i can no longer access my statements online and they are refusing to send out statemtents, ( because there is no account anymore?????). so now they want me to open a standing order with my bank to continue paying but i will have no proof that the money is going to the right place and also will not know how much i still owe. this has been going on since august and have still not been sorted out.

i am unemployed due to long term ill health so only get 188.50 a fortnight. im a recovering alocoholic, suffer with bipolar and borderline personality disorder and tend to use cannabis to help with all three of the above, however this is costing me £120 a month which tends to come before food as i dont seem to be able to go without it.

if anyone has any advice on anything i have spoken about it would be much appreciated.

  • those debts are tiny, dont take another penny of dirty credit money.

get some part time work and cut back on the habit, best of luck
  • I agree - although your debts are likely to feel MASSIVE to you, if you have a look at other threads around here you will definitely see your total debt is a fraction of many other peoples... So it is definitely achievable and you have started by taking a great step and deciding to get a diary on the go...

Why not post up your SOA and I am sure we can all see where you could maybe make some cut backs or suggest some alternatives and I am sure you will have your debt cleared off in no time and be on your way to enjoying freedom!

thank you for your replies. unfortunately i am unable to work due to my illnesses so am having to manage on what money i get at the moment. the po mastercard does get used once a month only for food shop when im desperate, but that is a very frugal shop where possible, as for the habit im afraid to come off it due to the fact that im finding it extremely hard not to drink. what is SOA?

im lucky that my friend has a second hand shop and when ppl bring in clothes that fit me she tends to give them to me for free. last wk had 4 hoodies and a pair of joggers, was landed lol. need them in this cold weather.

    money spent today -
£5 on taxi to hospital, not able to walk there and back due to ill health
    £6.50 on pouch of tabacco
    £1 on cigarette papers

Seems like you need to make more of an effort to get off the drugs, and back to work.

Your debts are easily manageable. The fact that you were able to type your post tells me that you would be able to, for example, work in an office.

    All the best.

...Without starting an argument on the OPs diary, I think that's a bit harsh. Until the OP kicks their alcohol and drugs habit and is mentally stable they won't be suitable for any working environment. It's harsh and horrible to say but bipolar disorder tends to leave you incredibly unreliable when it comes to turning up at a job every day!

OP if you're serious about doing this, then as the others have said you do need to get off the drugs and back to work - but you need to do it sensibly and well. Have you spoken to your doctor about getting off of them and getting support? Best of luck x

  • i am unable to work due to my constant mood changes and am at present on my 3rd attempt of meds for my bipolar and borderline personality disorder, i have had 2 break downs in the last 3 yrs due to these illnesses and any added stress would make me much worse. • i have managed to get off the alcohol for sometime now, that was hard in itself, there is no help to get off the cannabis as it is something i will have to do myself when i feel safe and ready to stop, (pretty much the same as alcoholics). i live alone and have no support from anyone. but with positive comments from all you kind ppl it helps. thanks

Hi purpleorchid, just wanted to stop by and say good luck with paying off your debts. I was just wondering what kind of support you are getting for your BPD/cannabis use? Have you been to your GP to ask for help with coping not just help in terms of medication? There are plenty of charities and organisations out there that can offer specialist advice and support that you probably won't get on a money saving board :)

It might be worth focusing on strategies to help you manage your mood and drug addiction, I'm sure getting those things stable will help no end with the money issues! Is there anything you can do to earn money that doesn't involve a formal job and that you can do while in a good frame of mind? For example online surveys? You don't have to declare income under a certain amount per year I don't think (I'd recommend checking this out!)
