A character reference maybe from a neighbour who has lived next door to you for a few years, or a friends parent?
  • two different teachers? a friend of the family in a position of authority?

or just give the one reference and explain on the form that due to your age you're unable to give two references.

i had the same prob when i applied for my job straight out of school i just put my teacher and a bloke who works at the council with my father
Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Controversial, but identifying a second referee is one of the tests that separates good school leaver candidates from weak ones IMHO.

Anyone with a smidgen of imagination should be able to think of someone they can ask. If not, then does that suggest they haven't been involved in any clubs, out of school activities, Saturday work etc, then that in itself - when you are dealing with dozens of applications - is likely to be an indication of the quality of the candidate and would be part of the initial filtering porcess.

At least the OP showed some initiative in asking on here though!

Your form tutor and your head of year from school. If they're the same person then put your best subject / favorite teacher down as well as your form tutor. At 16 / 17 with no work experience or only a family run job, firms wont expect you to have ones from different places.

They will - that's my point. By that age some kids have done babysitting, voluntary work, work experience, been in scouts etc, had a saturday job, been part of a sports team, etc etc. Two referees from school shows a lack of imagination and does not reflect the breadth of the candidate's life experience.

That's one thought, but I'm not sure how many placements will want to provide a reference if it was only for a week, and it's over a year ago.

You will need to get a character reference from people unless you had a little saturday job while at school or something.

It needs to be someone who isn't related to you.
