Driving Licence - points off free????

Had a chat with a driving instructor last night, and he claimed that:

If you have points on the licence that can be removed after "serving time" - normally 3 years - then you need to pay £19 per batch of 3 to remove them. BUT - if you change address and send the payment off with the change of address details at the same time, you'll likely get the cheque returned with a nice note saying that change of address is not charged.

Seems if this is true and you have points to take off and may move - wait until then.

Anyone verify this?

No - you only get them removed after 3 years. I've got 6 on mine. Why do you want them removed anyway? You have to declare them for 5 years to insurance companies.

Fairly sure it's gonna cost more than £19 to move house ;)

The points stay on your licence for 4 years, but only count for totting up for 3 years

I had 3 points on my licence. after 4 years i filed in the relevant form to obtain a new photocard licence and I had a new address. They did it for free.

Because I had a change of address they said that they will not charge me for the removal of the points as the change of address was free anyway. I can't remember if you have to pay for a new photocard or not, but my change from my old paper licence to a new photocard was done for free as well.

Basically what the DVLA told me was that if you have a change of name or address, as they normally do this for free, you can also request that they remove any expired points/new photocard - basically anything which you have to pay for and they will do it all for free. You do not even have to send them a cheque.

Even if it's possible to get it free it's only when you do this after the TIME IS UP
