I did it myself. I went to the divorce courts and they give you the forms which are pretty self explanatory to complete. These were then submitted back to them, and they send one copy to your soon to be exhusband who has to sign and return it to them. It then gets read through the courts and they will grant you your decree nisi, I think it is 6 weeks and 1 day you can then apply for your decree absolute.

It really was simple to do so long as you both agree on everything.

    Good luck

As others have said, it really is quite straightforward if both parties agree. Make sure you get a clean break order though.

I'm in the process of doing mine at the moment. As soon-to-be ex-hubby isn't really working he applied and got legal aid so we didn't have to pay the £310 court fee for the first stage. He did fill something in wrong on the form initially but it was really simple to sort out because they just sent the form back to him with details of what he'd done wrong and how to do it right. He filled in the fresh form they included and sent it back.

We're waiting for our decree nisi at the moment and I have the consent order ready to go as soon as we have our decree nisi. For us it's as straightforward as possible because there are no kids involved but I'd think that as you and your husband have been separated to long and your kids are practically adults now you should be able to agree childcare arrangements without a mediator.

The consent order is the only part of the DIY divorce that the court won't guide you through. If you have to go through a solicitor then it'll be about £500, Which is what I was quoted but it protects you as it means that your ex no longer has any claim over anything of yours. You have the peace of mind that comes with that. You may be able to find a nice helpful person on here who might be able to help though.

    Good luck, keep us informed.
  • I wouldnt pay a solicitor £500 to prepare a pre arranged consent order....Half of that would excessive

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread but does anyone know how long a Decree Nisi should take to come through?

The last bit of paperwork was delivered to court on Oct 18th, and I'm just wondering when I should expect to hear if Nisi has been granted.

My ex paid about 60 quid for ours, this was in 1994. He phoned me up (I was living down South) and said "well, we've been separated 2 years now, how about going for a divorce?" Me: "no problem, but you'll have to pay as I'm skint" Ex: "ok, but do you mind not putting adultery down (his) and just do 2 years separation" Me: aye, no problem, send me the papers to sign" He did, I signed, job done!! :D We had no kids to consider (grown up!) And no money issues either, although he wanted me to sing a paper saying I wouldn't go for half of his extremely generous pension. I told him to go to hell, he should have known me better than that!! :D I can't really remember how long it took, about 3/4 months I think.

Ex's wifes' (one he left me for) divorce cost a fortune, as her ex contested it, and it went to court. Her kids were quite a bit younger than mine, and there was a joint house to consider. (our house was mine) I'm sure ex told me it cost in excess of £3,000!!!
