Shaving

I'm getting fed up the never ending number of blades 'arms race' of razors, add in the cost of pre-shave conditioner, shave gel, aftershave balm etc it must be costing a fortune to dewhisker!

I've recently reverted to the old school shaving brush and soap (less than a pound for both at Wilko's) and use aqueous cream (99p from cheap shops) after shaving.

My search is on for a cheap razor - I've bought a few of the Supermarkets own ones and disposables but they are a bit pants so have stuck with Gillette Sensors but the cost is creeping up.

Anyone know of a good cheap razor? I think the old fashioned cutthroat might be a bit extreme though!

I've tried for years to get rid of my multi blade super dooper extortionate razor (I am a laaaaady) but to be honest with you the amount of money I was spending on cheap razors was more than those blades. My blades last an absolute age so I'm sticking with them - I think they are MSE believe it or not.

Also don't use any fancy shaving gels etc, conditioner to shave with for me

I also use the brush & soap method,as to a razor,I find it's often cheaper to buy a new one with free blades than just the blades as I find the disposable ones are quite often useless & don't give as good a shave as the reusable ones.

Apparently the secret to a long lasting blade is to make sure you dry it scrupulously after each use. Some bloke did an experiment and kept using the one razor for weeks, and it stayed sharp and.effective. I shall have a google for it, 'twas very interesting.

Good one Jackie. I have also heard that by keeping the razor in oil after use prolongs it''s life too. I haven't tried that mind but worth thinking about.

I've used Aldi's triple blade razor for the past 5 years or so. It's about £3.50 for 8 blades. 90% as good as the branded blades for considerably less cost.
  • I personally use asda's own, not the oober cheap smart price ones, but the one up. I can use one for about a week which involves shaving 2-3 times in the week, and then sometimes it will be good for another few days others it is due to be binned. I always dry mine though after use :)

Ever thought about going electric/battery? You dont need foam/gel, your skin doesnt get dried out by all the chemical stuff, a nice bit of balm or moisturiser afterwards and your good to go. The 'foils' need replacing after a couple years granted, but the machine itself can last a long long time (mine is 10 years old now and just replaced it).

Its not for everyone as its still not quite as smooth after as a wet shave but the newest ones are pretty darn close.

I just buy cheaper shaving cream (£1) from the new Poundland that's opened up. Used to buy the expensive stuff from boots (Nivea), but it's the same, even better. I buy a new pack of 6 blades every 2-3 months. One gillette blade lasts me 3 weeks sometimes. (I shave every day)

I stay with old technology, it worked for me 15 years ago. It works for me today.

Gillette Sensor Excel, 5 pack of blades - £4 ishy

2-3 shaves out of a blade, which is not too bad.
