We've just planted(yesterday and today) a Field Maple hedge(Acer Campestre) . We were looking for something fairly cheap as we have a good 200 ft to do. We are lucky that we have plant auctions quite near to us and picked up 100 plants for £33.32. They are deciduous so may not be for you but I think they are fairly colourful in autumn. We were going to have hornbeam but decided against it as our neighbour has a hornbeam hedge and we wanted something different lol.0

LOL, 35 ft of hedging, not 35 ft tall!:)
Doh! It was getting late.
How about Viburnum Tinus - evergreen, green and silver, has flowers early winter? It's fairly fast-growing, but the only source I've found so far with reasonable prices sells them small, so might have to wait a while before decent cover... I'm combining mine with an upright Cotoneaster to give some variety, as the rest of the garden is surrounded by the beginnings of a beech hedge.0 -
I am signed up to the Ken Muir newsletter and the latest one contains an article on edible hedging using plants such as Pear, Elder, Cherry Plum, Hazel and Sloe. They have an offer on as well, 10 plants for £22.50 + P & P enough for a 10 ft hedge.0

Many thanks, its really quite difficult to choose. OH isnt keen on hornbeam, he says it doesnt have the same deepness of colour as beech and loses most of its leaves in winter.
We defo want evergreen.
Ill have a look at those others you have kindly suggested.0 -
You could do a nice mixed hedging with plenty of berries in the autumn/winter for the birds, I have a mixed hedge I planted it 2 yrs ago, its now 5 foot tall about 20 inches thick , ..........
I have golden privet which is evergreen mixed with hawthorn, decidous, dog rose, green privet evergreen, its about 18 feet long, and the golden privet really looks nice against the greens..................ive also put some hedera ivy in with it and pitorsporum, which is also evergreen, , im aiming for a 6 foot high hedge 2 foot thick, it separates the chicken area from the garden, also hoping the birds will be able to nest in it in a year or two once it thickens a bit more, ................
Ive also got a 8 foot golden leylandi hedge 32 ft long and 2 foot thick, thats also a garden devider,I know a lot of people are deadly against leylandi but I always say they are a good hedge if you keep them trimmed twice a year..........Well youve had some good suggestions put on the thread, good luck with it.......0
