If you thrash a small engine you won't get much better mpg than gently driving a bigger engine.
However, you need to measure your mpg properly.

If you wonder about the engine size then you'll find an engine code on the engine somewhere.

Peelprincess. Next time you fill up, fill the car to the brim and reset the trip, then run it to when the light comes on. Look in the handbook, and it will tell you how much that is, probably around 40 litres. You will be able to work out what mpg you're getting.

A less risky (less risk of running out of fuel that is) and more accurate variation on this is to fill it to the brim, reset the trip, and then after you've used 3/4 of a tank or so, refill the tank to the brim and carefully note how much petrol you put back in and what the mileage is. Ensure the petrol forecourt is a nice level one each time, not one of those pokey little ones where you have to park on the tilt. The amount of petrol you put back in will equal the petrol you used doing the miles you just noted down.
