Iphone 3g Sound Problem

Hi All
My son has an iphone 3g and while at a friends house recently put his iphone into his friends external speakers to play some music. Since he has come home his music can only be heard with headphones or speakers.
This in itself is not a major problem as he tends to use headphones/speakers most of the time but the text message notification sound has also stopped working, Phone rings as normal for calls but not noticing text message is a problem.
Anyone got any ideas?
