Difficulty connecting automatically using Netgear WG111v2

This is driving me mad!
Running Windows XP and using a Netgear WG111v2 to connect wirelessly. I'm managing to (eventually) make a connection but only after manually starting the netgear software, then clicking on windows and asking it to configure.
What on earth is going on?!?
