I am looking at a new laptop. It will be used away from home, often for TV & i-Player viewing, which is why I am considering a 17". I have checked on the reliability graph here but it is a couple of years out of date, does anyone know of a more recent survey? That aside, Asus seemed to come out top at that time, so have been looking at this or this though I do not need Blu-Ray.
What is it used for in addition to the above, web browsing - multi pages open. Home video editing, photo editing, music, Access & Excel and obviously Word from time to time. Reliability is more important than cost, and long battery life, screen type for viewing in bad light conditions are too. Am I over spec-ing it, yes, for sure, but I am very impatient and do like a pc to respond, without needed to make a coffee in the middle, and have enough capacity to handle things without taking them to the edge. But am I really going too far? The two machines mentioned would be at the upper end of the budget, and if I can get something for less then I am always interested, but not at the expense of quality. Look forward to your thoughts. DG

ok well out of those two the Asus is the better one, due to better graphics card and better screen resolution - this however will mean slightly lower batter life, but to top it off its quite a bit cheaper.
as to other options, you will be limited with the fact you want the performance, and the fact 17 inch laptops are not as commen as 15 inch ones so tend to be limted in the spec syou can getDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Thanks Gonzo
I am also drawn towards Asus, and the fact of a 2 years Global warranty is also useful as I spend at least 4 months a year out of the UK.
Still trying to justify in my head the practicality of a 17", we drive over the Europe so carrying isn't a problem. I have also looked at this which seems to be identical but has NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 2 GB DDR3 VRAM, as opposed to Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M with 1GB DDR3 VRAM, maybe someone could tell me the difference there, other than it has more RAM?
They have confused me even more by adding this in now, which seems to have a better graphics card again with 2gb, and it is an i-7, and wondering if it is worth the £50 to get something which should fly?
As I said before probably OOT, but the one thing for sure is it will be used everyday, and nothing winds me up more than a slow PC.
